The Ocampa's home-world was destroy by the Naycne when their experiments accidentally stripped the planets atmosphere of nuclear-genic particles, turning its surface into a desert. Grief striken, the Naycne became the Ocampa's Caretakers and looked after them for the next 500 generations.

The Ocampa live for about 9 years. However, during Voyagers journey's they have met an Ocampa named Tanas who claimed to be 14 years old. Tanas explained that with the help of the female Caretaker Sisperia he could extend his life-span. He also claimed that his father lived for 20 years.
