Women of
Star Trek Voyager
Convention Report

Over the Memorial Day weekend I attend the Women of Star Trek Voyager convention and got the opportunity to meet my favorite actress Jennifer Lien.

I first got to meet Jennifer at the VIP cocktail party on the Saturday evening. I dressed up in my smartest cloths to look my best and set off to the ballroom. As the attendees filed in everyone was looking around to see if any of the convention guests had appeared but no one could see them. The setting was elegant and there was a beautiful ice sculpture of the Voyager ship. Kate Mulgrew was first to appear at the cocktail party, I knew it was Kate when people starting surrounding her, it was like a mini mob scene. About 20 minutes into the party I looked around and saw a familiar face looking at the Voyager ice sculpture, it was Jennifer. Jennifer was wearing a nice black outfit and trousers and had her hair tied up around the back.

No one had noticed her, probably because she did not have the pointy ears and Kes hairdo. Jennifer's mother Delores was there also. Jennifer looked gorgeous and looked as perfect as she does on TV. As Jennifer was talking to another guest (Star Trek artist) I went around and said hi to her mum and told her about the birthday card we had sent Jennifer. Delores then called Jennifer over to me because she remembered the birthday card and JL newsletter (yes I brought a few copies to show them). Jennifer knew who I was instantly and greeted me with a million-dollar smile and told me that it was nice to finally meet. She even asked if I had received the letter that she wrote to me; I said yes. Jennifer then told me that she received the latest birthday card and said thank you.

I asked her about what she was doing now and that I had heard Ethan Philip's say that she was returning to school to study. Delores said to ask Jennifer at tomorrows Q&A and she will reveal the news then.

After I had my photograph taken with Jennifer people started to notice that she was there and a small crowd formed. I did not want to take up all of Jennifer's time so I thanked her for our chat and Jennifer started to mingle with the other party guests.

On Sunday, Roxanne closed her talk by introducing Jennifer Lien to the crowd of excited fans. Jennifer chatted for a while with Roxanne and then thanked the fans and said that it was great to be here in Cleveland.

Someone asked what Jennifer was doing now and she said that she is taking a break from the entertainment industry and has gone back to school. She is even not taking any more voice work in order to concentrate on her studies (this is why she isn't doing Men In Black anymore). She has already done 1 or 2 years of her studies. I wish Jennifer the best in her schooling and hope she gets straight A's !!!

I asked her about Rubbernecking and Hoofboy and she said that they are still looking for a distributor for the Rubbernecking. As for Hoofboy, sadly she never heard of it but she said "It sounds kinda kinky !" ;-) We all laughed.

I then asked about the Spawn beetles in the episode Elogium and how it seemed like she was eating real beetles. Jennifer said that the beetles were in fact candies that were shaped to look like beetles. So in fact all she was doing was eating candies.

A fan then asked if any pranks or anything weird happened on the Voyager set. Jennifer answered "Did you hear about when my hair caught on fire?" There were gasps from the audience and then Jennifer replied "No, only kidding". Everyone laughed, Jennifer had played a prank on us all and fell for it!

Asked if Jennifer preferred her character with short or long hair Jennifer replied that she was thankful her character even had hair [more laughs]. She told us that when Kes had long hair sometimes she would still need to wear the Ocampan ears but at other times she would not have to.

I worked my way to the front of the line for questions and managed to ask Jennifer another couple of questions. I asked her that during the beginning of Voyager Kes asked the Doctor what was his name and the Doctor replied that he didn't have one. Many episodes went by whilst Kes and the Doctor went through choices for names; I then asked Jennifer what she felt about the Doctors choice of "Joe" in the final episode and what name she would have picked. Jennifer gave a very funny puzzled/shocked look and said "He picked Joe !!!!". Jennifer then said that she would have either picked Zimmerman or Schweitzer. Jennifer likes reading poetry and science fiction but she has never read any of the Star Trek Voyager books. Also Jennifer is Norwegian.

After I had asked my questions; and was just about to head back to my seat; I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned around and saw that it was my friend Dee that I had met at the convention. Dee then asked me to stick around and then told Jennifer that I was a big fan and if I could go up on stage and have my photo taken with her. Jennifer said it was ok. I was taken aback by the complement and nice gesture from Dee and would like to take this opportunity to say big thank you. Standing on stage with Jennifer was a magical moment and topped off a fantastic weekend.
