With Star Trek shows more or less following the exploits of military personnel, wardrobe is essentially a constant. Kirk wore his casual green top on occasion, and the TNG cast wore civvies a few times each. DS9's inhabitants spend a lot more time 'at home', and therefore in casual attire. Voyager returns to the TNG on-board attire mode with one major exception: Kes.

With Kes there has been a concerted effort to create a wardrobe of clothes that adheres to a certain style, gives the appearence of a normal civilian repertoire, and avoids the stigma of STrek that normally sees all aliens of any race dress like clones of one another. This article will shed light on the apparel worn by the Ocampan during the show, providing brief design notes, a log of sightings and some major events that occurred to Kes whilst wearing each outfit.

Kes has worn 13 outfits over the first sixty-seven episodes, and on eight occasions has worn a one-time ensemble called-for by the specific situation. There are elements basic to 10 of her 13 outfits: heeled boots, black; stirruped leggings; from one to three of the following... an undertunic that extends to mid-thigh or just above the knee... an overshirt... a base- or under-garment below the first two tops, evidenced by long sleeves and/or a high neck peeking out.

The 3 newer outfits are all more provocative, starting with a two-tone catsuit, a jacketted pantsuit and a skirted ensemble reminiscent of one worn by Counsellor Troi on TNG.

Here, now, is a listing of Kes' outfits, with a name assigned to each for aesthetic purposes, and various facts associated with the garb.

Nynaeve

Debut: Caretaker

Worn 12 times: Car, EoN, SoF, Fac, LeC, Elo, Tat, CoF, All, Res, War, Mac

Nynaeve is the standard Kes-wear, in which she is seen in all pre-premiere publicity. It consists of dark orange leggings and an orange undershirt. A red tunic is then overlain with an orange 'dress' that leaves the left shoulder bare and sweeps down lower on the left side. Long and short-sleeved versions exist, the long version seen less frequently but shown here.

Key Moments: Kes does her first medical diagnosis on Lt. Walter Baxter's wrist.EoN She nearly fries Tuvok, but then saves the ship from Susperia with her burgeoning mental powers.CoF She undergoes false Elogium.Elo She is 'infected' with Tieran's conciousness whilst trying to save his life.War

Siuan

Debut: Caretaker

Worn 3 times: Car, Par, BaA

The least-worn of the regular outfits, Siuan is the basis for the later, more complex Danara. Dark green leggings underpin an olive green tunic. Rather than accompany an undershirt, the tunic is worn alone, trimmed with triangular inserts of bright yellow at the shoulder and tricep.

Key moment: Kes attends her first staff meeting as 'senior Ocampa'.Par When contaminated by chronoton particles, the reversed-time Kes is seen in a revision of a scene from "Caretaker" in this outfit in "Before and After".BaA

Sheriam

Debut: Time and Again

Worn 7 times: TaA, Clo, EoN, PrF, Cat, 37s, Pro

Sheriam is the only non-Nynaeve outfit seen in First Season promotional material. It is worn in the T.V. Guide special issue poster. It is not worn in any episode filmed for the Second Season. Consisting of two shades of purple, it is darker in the leggings and the knee-length skirt, lighter-hued in the high-collared, wedge-cut-front top. The top has 24 ribs running vertically from neck to waist.

Key moments: Kes exhibits early psychic developments, sensing the polaric-energy holocaust on a nearby planetTaA and Chakotay's disembodied consciousness.Cat Unfortunately, she also kisses Neelix a lot. Clo

Shayol Ghul

Debut: Phage

Worn 7 times: Pha, EPF, Ema, HaD, Jet, Pro, Twi

Also not worn after First Season filming, Shayol Ghul is slightly altered and changes its colour scheme to become Amyrlin in Season Two. An orange undergarment and overshirt sandwich a bright yellow tunic with two symmetric, curved panels at the waist's sides.

Key moments: Kes celebrates her 2nd birthday.Twi She begins her medical studies.EPF She convinces the Holodoc to go on his first away mission.HaD

Jadzia

Debut: Cathexis

Worn 13 times: Cat, LeC, Elo, Pat, PoV, CoF, DeW, Lif, Tha, Tuv, Ba1, Fla, SaG

The most oft-worn outfit, Jadzia is one of the two most stylish. Over steel grey leggings is a green, creped tunic that hangs mid-thigh. The top layer is a double-breasted grey skirt that interlocks itself at the waist.

Key moments: Kes is attacked by the Komar-possessed Tuvok.Cat She causes a fight between Neelix and ParisPat (though, unfortunately, it's not to the death.) She begins her mental training.CoF She agrees to befriend Tuvix, but later signs his death warrant in an emotional speech to Janeway.Tuv

Danara

Debut: Jetrel

Worn 5 times: Jet, Man, All, Thr, Lif

A more complex design built on the ruins of the Siuan skeleton, Danara is the 'safe' outfit for Kes. Nothing ever happens to her whilst she wears it. Navy blue leggings are topped by a blue, long-sleeved tunic that features the same bright yellow inserts as the Siuan predecessor. The stylish additional feature is a combination sash-belt. The sash goes from the left shoulder, diagonally, to the right waist, wraps around behind Kes and flares across her hips to her right side. A thin belt, navy blue like the rest of the additions, holds everything in place.

Key moment: Kes and the Holodoc are unable to stop Paris from 'dying' after his Warp 10 trip; they are also unable to stop the rest of the episode from happening.Thr

Amyrlin

Debut: Initiations

Worn 12 times: Ini, Pat, Tat, Prt, Dre, Inn, Tuv, Fla, FuE, War, Cod, WCS

Amyrlin is a slightly different version of the First Season's Shayol Ghul. The earlier orange tunic is replaced by a dark pink one, whilst the yellow and orange undergarments are replaced by two different shades of purple. Added is a belt that dips into the garment in front at the edge of the side panels. This can function as a utility belt during away missions. ( ref: "Initiations" )

Key moments: Kes trains in a shuttle simulator with Paris, and becomes an object of his lust.Pat She goes on her first military away team assignment.Ini She fails to help either the Holodoc or Ensign Wildman with their name selections.Dre She is dressed in this outfit by Tuvok in his 'Insurrection Alpha' security training holonovel.WCS

Tamura

Debut: Cold Fire

Worn 7 times: CoF, Lif, Res, FaP, Rem, War, BlF

Worn only three times, and briefly, at that, until season three, Tamura has brown leggings and overshirt sandwich a sky blue tunic. The overshirt features a unique circular-cut neck with a slim deep cut in the centre. For style there is a slim belt that submerges across the front third of the waist, and an overlapping cutaway in the front left part of the skirt. It is worn with a loose, calf-length brown overlay during Kes' experiences with Tieran.

Key moments: Kes assures Schmullus (that's the Holodoc to you) that "...romance [with Danara Pel] is not a malfunction."Lif She hears Janeway's farewell.Res She takes Voyager while under Tieran's control.War

Odana

Debut: Meld

Worn 11 times: Mel, Inv, Tuv, Res, Ba1, Ba2, Swa, FuE, War, FaT, Uni

Odana survived a lot of wear and tear, as it is the only outfit Kes had when all were stranded on Hanon IV. Dark red leggings, a blood red undershirt, a blue tunic and a red overshirt comprise Odana, which is worn both with and without (Mel,Inv) a belt.

Key moments: Kes first encounters Tuvix in sickbay.Tuv She convinces Tuvok to contact the Vidiians to attempt to find a cure for Janeway and Chakotay.Res Kes breaks up with Neelix, partly under Tieran's influence.War

Aridhol

Debut: Meld

Worn 9 times: Mel, Dea, Tuv, Chu, SaG, War, Q&G, Cod, Ris

Aridhol is a memorable outfit. Grey leggings are its base. Then, a long-sleeved, grey undershirt is covered by a creped gold tunic. Over all is a thin-belted grey overshirt. This shirt features triangular cutouts in each shoulder, exposing the gold beneath.

Key moments: Kes must face the manipulations of her un-mind-controlled mentor, Tuvok, in sickbay.Mel This outfit is worn by both Keses when they meet on Voyager~.Dea She is knocked unconcious by a biogenic field and saved by Janeway's heroics.SaG During the mental battle with Tieran, this is the outfit in which she clothes herself.War

Nori

Debut: Warlord

Worn 1 time: War

Nori is really only a singular event outfit, but, made of various shades and grains of leather, and worn by the aggressive, Tieran-possessed Kes, it deserves a spot of its own.

Key moments: Kes/Tieran brutally enforce their new Ilari regime, detect and attempt the seduction of Tuvok, are betrothed to Ameron and finally separated when Tieran flees attack by Voyager crew.War

Linnis

Debut: The Darkling

Worn 5 times: Dar, BaA, DiO, Sc1, Gif

Linnis is the second of the three new outfits. It, too, is a full body suit, although it is by no means as tight as Vogue. For style it has a waist-length jacket worn over it.

Key moment: Kes 'sees' the genocidal purpose in the minds of Species 8472 as Voyager witnesses their egress from a quantum singularity.Sc1  Kes wears Linnis as she undergoes her transformation to a higher being.  Goodbye, Kes!Gif

Martis

Debut: Before and After

Worn 3 times: BaA, ReL, Sc1

Martis is the last of the three new outfits. Similar to one of the skirt-pants outfits worn by Troi in TNG, Martis is the outfit of choice for Kes for late third season events!

Key moments: Kes, travelling back against the grain of Time, is first infected with the chronoton particles of the Krenim torpedo.BaA Whilst working in sickbay she first exhibits prescience when she envisions Borg corpses, the destruction of Voyager and danger to Harry~ Kim~.Sc1

Singular Events

A very ragged Kes wears blue leggings and two, shaded brown tops when first rescued from the Kazon-Ogla in "Caretaker". [See this outfit!]

She awakens from a psychic nightmare in silky, pink bedclothes in "Time and Again". [See this outfit!]

As do all patients (Janeway, Torres and Seska among them) Kes wears the blue sickbay garb when she donates a lung to Neelix in "Phage". She also wears medical garb whilst the Holodoc unsuccessfully tries to revive her from the biogenically-induced coma in "Sacred Ground".  [See this outfit!]

In the Holodoc's 'vision' the human Kes (with human ears) wears a beige top over yellow leggings in "Projections". [See this outfit!]

She wears a one-piece red bathing suit and a flower-print, black print wrap to the Rinax holo-resort in "Alter Ego". [See this spectacular outfit!]

Throughout "Before and After" the older versions of Kes wear a series of thicker sweaters, primarily earth tones.  [See this outfit!]
